For the fourth year in a row, about 60 championship-caliber upland game bird hunters from across eight Midwestern and Western states will gather at Mozingo Lake Recreation Park for the Bird Hunters United field trials.
Beginning on Friday shooters and gundogs took to the snow-covered fields surrounding the Mozingo youth camp cabins for three days of competition involving both “pointing” and “flushing” breeds.
Point dogs are trained to lead hunters to game by freezing in place with their muzzles pointed toward the quarry. Flushing dogs actually run up on birds and drive them from cover into the open.
The BHU field trials, during which shooters bag freshly released pen-raised chukar partridges, is an invitational event open only to hunters and dogs whose point totals place them among the elite of sportsmen — and sportswomen — who take part in such contests nationally.
